Greetings! Since our return from Taiwan and the release of the DOODS and Lost Time Accident albums, we have been busy preparing for launches and the first performance of Undercurrents in Australia.

We're also helping to bring out to Australia a group of Taiwanese composers, DJs and video artists. Some of these people will have their work featured in the upcoming performance of Undercurrents at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

If you're organising events around October and would like to work with one of our guests from Taiwan, contact us as soon as you can.

We need as many invitations as we can muster to ensure funding from the Taiwanese government to have them join us for projects proposed with the Melbourne Fringe Festival, the 6th International Congress on AIDS in Asia Pacific, Electrofringe and the MAAP festival in Brisbane.

___DOODS! What gives?

The Department of Ongoing Digital Situations (DOODS) formed in the heady mid-90s, responding to the corporatisation of public media, public communication technologies and public education. They launched their much exhibited web site in 1995 and went on to organise the first Australian screening of Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle", State Film Theatre, Melbourne, 1996. It was during such events that plans for "Secret City" were hatched, and grew into a limited cassette release.

2001 sees a remixed and re-mastered release with artwork by the DOODS in collaboration with Toy Satellite designer, Andrew Thomas. "Secret City" includes the provocative collage from DOODS co-founder, Alberto Tsara, "Legends to Maps of Freedom", comprised of sound fragments with media art luminaries such as Greil Marcus, Bruce Sterling, Natalie Jereminjenko and Craig Baldwin.

DOODS co-founder, Ion Van Gemsy's "Unheard History of Cyberspace", is a map of sonic activity occurring in parallel with significant social and personal markers identifying the public advance onto the Internet. The "Unheard History of Cyberspace" is dedicated to the social activists who shaped and extended the net across Asia from the late 80s to the early 90s.

Tsara and Van Gemsy are joined on "Secret City" by Justin Time, a close confidant of the DOODS. Time's disturbing violin carves through the audible space much like a school of sharks in attack frenzy.

"Secret City" also contains re-mixes of audio works commissioned from Secession founder, Andrew Garton, for the award winning interactives, "MEMO" by Matt Riley and "City of Spare Parts" by Sam Fermo.

DOODS' "Secret City" is more than window, it's a map that can be read and heard, reinterpreted and judged, itemised and accounted for.

___"Undercurrents" @ Melbourne International Film Festival

"Undercurrents", commissioned for and performed at the launch of the Taipei International Arts Festival, will be premiered in Australia at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

"Undercurrents" features collage and improvisation techniques, concentrating on the development of simultaneous sonic and visual relationships.

"Undercurrents" integrates the shared concerns of Australian and Taiwanese artists, in particular those of ecological values and cultural identity.

Featured in this performance will be pieces by Taiwanese artists:

_Jim-e (trance, goa, experimental ambient)
_DJ Ty (freestyle, breaks and DnBass)
_Monbaza (trance, goa)
_Penelope Chiang (alarmingly "free" free-form singer)
_Fujui (Ching-Shen-Ching) (minimalist, noise)
_Lin Chiang (ambient, dub)
_VJ's Austin Wang and Vince Chung (our eyes on Taiwan)

In addition, "Undercurrents" features excerpts from Sydney composer Robert Iolini's "Black Sheep", personal accounts of young Aboriginal boys held in the Don Dale Juvinile Detention Centre, Northern Territory. Photos by Randy Larcombe will accompany this addition to the performance.

Undercurrents, produced by Toy Satellite in collaboration with 2 LOOPS and performed by:

_Andrew Garton
_Kim Bounds
_John Power
