The 1938 Degenerate Music Exhibition in Düsseldorf
a free public lecture by
Dr Albrecht Dumling
Institute of Musicology in Berlin
Dr Dumling, musicologist and music critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, is the organiser and curator of the travelling exhibition "Entartete Musik: A Critical Reconstruction (Düsseldorf 1938/1988)". Since 1988 this exhibit, which recreates the "degenerate music" exhibition staged by the Nazis in 1938, has been seen in more than 50 cities throughout Germany, the United States, Great Britain and Japan.
Dr Dumling's lecture will explore the Nazis' program of "cleansing" German music of Jewish influences as well as examine the relationship between Richard Wagner and Adolf Hitler. His lecture will by supplemented by some musical examples drawn from the CD created for 1988 reconstruction of the Degenerate Music exhibit.
