last friday was probably the most diverse of exp evenings to date. melbourne never ceases to surprise me...

we started off with a delicate piece from warren burt. he read a remarkable new zealand poem within the very low-lit basement venue that is centriphugal. his voice was processed live, hanging in the low ceiling space on the verge of feedback, crystalline, as if sheets of oiled glass could be heard slowly shifting across each other. i don't think centriphugal had ever been host to anything like it... for a brief 45 or so minutes the club was transformed into a subtle sound chamber, or perhaps a liquid listening space, dark, comforting and safe even...

warren was followed by jim knox who, on the other end of the scale, opened out the night with a chaotic, cathartic and relentless collage of sounds sourced from the urban memory-scape... it was extremely arresting and had jim sweating, clinging to the mixer with spider-like hands ascending from the rear of the DJ booth where he crouched.

during his set a couple guys slid around the floor, scoping the space for a bit of agile body work, spins, runs and crab-like movements that bleed into soahab's cool set of dark, sensual and ominous hip hop. this was hip hop unlike anything i'd heard before... soahab, if you're reading this, a track list of your set would be most appreciated...

soahab's set was enhanced by kim bound's (chroma) dark, subtle and penetrating visuals that rolled, flowed and caressed soahab's selected tracks... a thoroughly well rounded, totally inspiring evening...
